Public Works Department



truck resizedThe Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining the Township's public infrastructure, transportation systems, municipal facilities, and public assets while providing essential services that protect public health, safety, and quality of life.

Department personnel perform a wide variety of daily, seasonal, and emergency operations to ensure Township services remain reliable, efficient, and responsive to the needs of residents.

Public Works - Summary of Duties

Roadway Maintenance
  • Maintain approximately 52 miles of Township-owned roadways
  • Repair potholes, pavement failures, and roadway shoulders
  • Perform crack sealing, roadside shoulder mowing, drainage maintenance, and street sweeping
  • Maintain road signs, guide rails, pavement markings, and traffic control devices
  • Maintain and repair 17 traffic signals to ensure safe and efficient traffic flow
  • Remove fallen trees, debris, and roadway hazards
  • Respond to emergency road closures and storm-related damage
Snow and Ice Control
  • Plow and treat Township roads during winter weather events
  • Apply salt and anti-skid materials to improve roadway safety
  • Monitor weather conditions and provide 24-hour response during snow and ice events
  • Maintain snow removal equipment and ensure emergency preparedness
Stormwater (MS4) Program
  • Administer and maintain the Township's Municipal Separate Storm Water Sewer Systems (MS4) Program
  • Inspect and maintain stormwater infrastructure, including inlets, pipes, culverts, swales, and drainage facilities
  • Conduct required MS4 inspections, documentation, mapping, and regulatory reporting
  • Implement pollution prevention and good housekeeping practices to ensure compliance with state and federal stormwater regulations
Traffic Safety and Utility Coordination
  • Maintain certified personnel to provide traffic control and flagger operations for roadway construction, maintenance, and emergency response
  • Process and respond to Pennsylvania One Call utility locate requests on a daily basis to protect underground infrastructure and support safe excavation activities
  • Coordinate with utility companies, contractors, emergency responders, and PennDOT on roadway and infrastructure projects
Fleet and Vehicle Services
  • Employ three Pennsylvania Certified Vehicle Safety Inspection Technicians to perform required inspections and maintain the Township's municipal fleet in compliance with state regulations
  • Operate and maintain trucks, heavy equipment, tractors, mowers, and specialized equipment necessary to support Township operations
Leaf Collection and Brush Recycling
  • Operate the Township's seasonal leaf collection program, providing curbside collection to residents
  • Manage the Township's brush recycling program, including collection, processing, and recycling of woody debris
  • Maintain brush drop-off areas and associated equpiment
Municipal Facilities
  • Maintain Township-owned buildings and public facilities
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs to building systems and grounds
  • Coordinate repairs with outside contractors when necessary
Public Safety and Emergency Response
  • Respond to severe weather events, flooding, downed trees, roadway hazards, and other emergencies
  • Assist  police, fire, EMS, utility companies, and other agencies during emergency incidents
  • Establish traffic control and secure hazardous areas during emergencies
Community Support
  • Prepare for Township-sponsored events, parades, festivals, and community activities
  • Install temporary traffic control, barricades, signage, and event infrastructure
  • Respond to resident service requests, complaints, and concerns related to Township infrastructure, roads, drainage, facilities, and public property
  • Investigate reported issues, determine appropriate corrective actions, and coordinate necessary repairs or follow-up
  • Communicate with residents, contractors, utility companies, and other agencies to address public concerns and maintain effective service delivery
Asset Management and Infrastructure Preservation
  • Inspect Township infrastructure and identify maintenance needs
  • Plan preventative maintenance activities to extend the service life of roads, traffic signals, stormwater infrastructure, municipal facilities, and other public assets
  • Coordinate capital improvement projects and assist with contractor oversight
